Optimize the Page

"It takes less time to do things right then to explain why you did it wrong." -Longfellow

From the perspective of a search engine your website is not a single page, but many pages.  You hope a search engine will index each page well.  The objective is to focus each page on a single term.  Think of your site as having many “entry points”.  Each page on your site is a potential entry point.

Optimizing a page in your site is a three-step process.  This three-step process should be performed on each page of your site.

Three steps to Search Engine Optimization:

1. Use the keywords in the heading tag.
2. Use the keywords in the page title and meta tags.
3. Use the keywords on the page.

Step 1.  Use the key words often in the text

Write the text for each page of your site specifically for the person who will enter your site on that page.  Remember they are there, because it matched a specific set of search terms.  In the example below Office and Desk Organizing the terms need to appear more often in the text.
There is not a lot of keyword density in this example: (The bold in the boxes is added for editorial emphasis only.)

In the example below we have increased the keyword density without impacting the readability of the text.

Step Two:  Use the keywords in a heading tag

Using the Tag around your keywords is an important step.  This is an HTML heading tag and will also apply your heading 1 style to the text.  You can apply the H1 tags using an HTML editor or your content management software.

For i-Web Suite users this is an easy task:

1. First navigate to the page and edit the content on that page.
2. Select the heading or title text
3. Choose the Heading 1

Style tag

Step three: Use the keywords in page title and meta-tags

The next step is one of the most powerful and least used.  This is the step that will give you a real edge over your competition in the race to top search engine placement.

i -Web Suite makes what would be a large effort in marking a page up with multiple tags a very simple effort that can be accomplished from a single screen.

1. Navigate to the menu item that you want to edit and click the “Edit All Items” pencil button.

2. Then Click the Pencil tool to edit the menu properties.

3. Edit the Page Title, Keywords and Description fields to ensure that they all have the keywords. Using your page editor or content management tool you will want to create a page that has consistent entries in the Page Title, KeyWord Meta Tag and the description Meta Tag.

Review

That’s it.  You now have the basic tools you need to start building a high-performance website.  There are five action items in order to Get Googled:

1. Build your lists of terms or keywords
2. Write appropriate content for each term
3. Optimize the Pages
4. Put the pages on your sitemap
5. Be consistent

If you have a good content management system steps three and four should happen automatically for you.  A good content management system will allow you to build pages and easily specify the terms and put them into the appropriate places to optimize the page.

Now if you already have existing pages of content you need to review the title, heading and meta tags to make sure they are all aligned.

Remember having text that is consistent with the title tag and H1 tag is critical.
